One of the wonderful things about being an herbalist is that there are so very many ways to go about it. It's a field rich in diversity and opportunity to explore, that has so far had few delineations or boundaries imposed upon it. We garden, we forage, we harvest and process. We make medicine. We care for our friends and family, we see clients, spend hours researching, and do our best to advise them. We cook with wild foods. We teach. We experiment and formulate. We watch the seasons. We maintain websites and exhaustive records. We organize events. We travel. We make and sell products. We write. We - never underestimate the importance of this - walk and sit and breathe among the plants. And always, we strive to learn.
This wide range of work, while intriguing, also presents a bit of a danger for those of us who dive headlong into the rabbit-hole of our passions. I have finally come to realize that, as with life in general, I can't do all of these things at once and hope to do any of them well. It's become necessary to choose those aspects that call to me most strongly, and give them my full attention. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at the Toledo Farmers' Market. It's a phenomenal community - both vendors and customers - and I have loved getting to know you all. You've taught me many things that I couldn't have learned any other way, and brightened my weekends for the past two years. However, after much soul-searching, I've decided that the retail realm is not where my priorities lie at the moment. It's time to focus on the teaching, writing, and growing aspects of my practice, as well as my work on the upcoming Great Lakes Herb Faire. Most importantly, I need to return to studying the plants and practicing herbal medicine on a regular basis.
As of the end of May, I will be taking an indefinite hiatus from the Market. Willow Moon Botanicals will continue to exist, but for now its function will be more of an educational resource and, hopefully, a hub for the herbal-minded community here; any products offered will be specialized, small-batch, and probably unpredictable. If any of you are particularly fond of anything that I make, you're welcome to contact me and we'll see if we can come to some arrangement. As I implied, I will continue to offer classes and herbal surveys, and I'll be available via facebook, email, or my website for questions or consultations.
To the best of my knowledge, this will be my schedule for the next six weeks:
April 18 - Out of town
April 25 - Indoor Market 9:00 - 1:00
May 2 - Other commitments
May 9 - Regular Farmers' Market 8:00 - 2:00
May 16 - Farmers' Market 8:00 - 2:00
May 23 - Flower Day 8:00 - 4:00
May 24 - Flower Day 8:00 - 4:00
Thank you for all of your support, and I do hope we cross paths in the future.
Green Blessings,
Sarah
